Best Times to Visit World Cities: Weather, Crowds, and Time Zone Considerations
Planning a trip to Tokyo, Paris, or Buenos Aires? Most travel guides focus on weather and tourist seasons. But time zone differences from your home city dramatically affect how you experience the first 2-4 days of your trip. Here is a smarter way to plan your travel timing, factoring in both destination conditions and time zone jet lag.
Tokyo, Japan (UTC+9)
Best months: March-April (cherry blossoms, mild weather) and October-November (autumn foliage, comfortable). Avoid: June (rainy season) and August (extreme heat and humidity). Time zone considerations: From the US East Coast, Tokyo is 13-14 hours ahead. The jet lag is severe going east. Plan at least 3-4 recovery days. From Europe (CET), Tokyo is 7-8 hours ahead. Moderate jet lag, exacerbated by eastward travel. Morning arrival flights from Europe let you start adjusting immediately with daytime light exposure. From Australia, Tokyo is only 1 hour behind Sydney, so jet lag is minimal.
Paris, France (UTC+1/UTC+2)
Best months: April-June and September-October (mild, fewer crowds than July-August). Avoid: August (Parisians leave, many restaurants close) and January (cold, gray, early sunsets). Time zone considerations: From the US East Coast, Paris is 5-6 hours ahead. Eastward jet lag is significant. Consider booking a flight that arrives in the afternoon so you can stay awake until evening. From the US West Coast, Paris is 8-9 hours ahead. Very significant jet lag. Allow 4-5 days for full adjustment. From the Middle East, minimal jet lag (1-2 hours).
Bangkok, Thailand (UTC+7)
Best months: November-February (cool and dry season, most comfortable). Avoid: March-May (burning season in the north, extreme heat) and September-October (peak monsoon). Time zone considerations: From Europe, Bangkok is 5-6 hours ahead (winter/summer dependent). Moderate eastward jet lag. From the US West Coast, Bangkok is 14-15 hours ahead. Extreme jet lag going east. Consider a stopover in Japan or Korea to break the journey. From Australia, Bangkok is 3-4 hours behind. Westward travel is easier for adaptation.
